• Bargate Welcomes Next Generation of Homebuilding Talent

Bargate has proudly welcomed three promising graduates from the local area into key roles across our design, development and planning departments at our Hampshire head office. The latest investment in graduate recruits signals our long-term commitment to addressing the construction sector’s escalating skills shortage.

Felicity Jenkinson‑Hutchison from Hedge End and Jenni Hardy from Salisbury have joined the business as Design & Development Graduates, while Elise Hutton from Petersfield has joined the Land & Planning team as a Graduate Planner. Each brings fresh perspectives, creativity, and determination to help deliver the homes local communities need.

Mark White, Bargate’s Managing Director, said: “The construction industry continues to face a skills shortage, while the government’s target is to build 1.5 million new homes in England. There is much work to be done to encourage new talent to increase the workflow of these new homes. We are proud that our talented graduates are actively responding to the government’s call for new homes, working right across the pre-construction complexities of residential development.”

Felicity Jenkinson‑Hutchison, a University of Portsmouth graduate in Property Development BSc, has recently started working on the upcoming Southleigh Park site. Having previously worked at a national housebuilder, she brings experience and a fresh perspective. Felicity said, “I’ve already learnt so much – the role here has opened my eyes to the full complexity of pre-construction. It’s exciting to be growing alongside Bargate as the business itself evolves.”

Jenni Hardy, who studied Interior Architecture & Design at the University for Creative Arts in Farnham, joined Bargate in May and is already contributing to a range of active projects, including its new development in Pagham, Marlow Walk in Warsash, and Heritage Place, North Stoneham Park. Jenni said, “This has been a steep and exciting learning curve – everything is new, and I’m gaining hands-on experience from day one.”

Elise Hutton graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Geography and joined Bargate in March. She is now working closely with the Land and Planning team, supporting new sites including Whiteparish and Medstead. Elise said, “Planning was a leap into the unknown for me, but I’ve found an incredibly supportive team and a role that’s both challenging and rewarding.”

As part of its wider talent strategy, Bargate is committed to creating a sustainable, skilled workforce. The company works closely with suppliers to ensure they have the business visibility to train apprentices, and it actively engages with schools to raise awareness of the broad range of careers available in the construction sector.

Mark White, added: “It is immensely rewarding to see young people from the local community working on our live developments, but the whole industry needs a better, more reliable workflow to make construction a more attractive proposition for career choices.”

  • Bargate submits Reserved Matters for Berewood Garden Village homes

We have submitted our first phase of detailed plans for a consented housing development site in Berewood Garden Village, Waterlooville, to Winchester City Council.

The newly lodged reserved matters application sets out design details for the first of two phases we will be delivering at Berewood, comprising 62 mixed tenure homes in the first stage.

Our new development is part of Grainger plc’s (the largest listed residential landlord) wider Berewood Masterplan, which received outline planning permission in March 2012 to deliver at least 2,550 homes and local amenities. Bargate is the first and currently only Hampshire housebuilder working with the master developers on this extensive 250-acre scheme, alongside a handful of national and PLC providers.

This new community – phase 11B – falls within the ‘Garden Suburb’ area of the Berewood  Masterplan and is positioned on the western boundary, overlooking open countryside and a nature reserve. The proposed plans include an attractive mix of high EPC-rated one- to four-bedroom homes, all with Bargate’s signature quality craftsmanship, traditional style and iconic gable porches. We will also deliver a play area and footpath network, connecting to the wider scheme.

In our plans, many of the new homes are to feature garages, with parking generally provided on-plot. Additional visitor parking is incorporated within the proposal, and every home will benefit from its own EV charging point. Air-source heat pumps and PV solar panels will be delivered as standard.

Mark White, Managing Director, commented: “We’re delighted to be submitting Bargate’s first detailed plans for Berewood Garden Village. We’ve worked tirelessly with the master planners to ensure the overall design code is upheld, whilst bringing Bargate’s hallmark architectural elements, first-class craftsmanship and high-spec interiors.

“This particular designated development area is an idyllic spot, with uninterrupted views of the nature reserve, ponds and close proximity to play areas and the primary school due to open later this year. It’s without doubt an ideal location for first-time buyers, growing families, and downsizers, and we can’t wait to bring our thoughtfully designed and energy-efficient homes here to this fantastic growing community.”

David McCarthy, Senior Project Manager at Grainger plc, added: “It’s great to see the submission of the first phase of detailed housing plans from Bargate. This marks an important step in bringing our shared vision for the Berewood community to life. We look forward to working closely together to ensure the delivery of high-quality homes that meet the needs of future residents.”

Of the 62 homes, 40% will be allocated for much-needed affordable housing. These 25 affordable homes will be available for both shared ownership and affordable rent.

Berewood sits close to the bustling town of Waterlooville. With easy access to the A3, great links to London and the picturesque coastlines of Hampshire only a few miles away, Berewood combines the beauty of country living with all the benefits of nearby towns, commuter routes and coastline.

Company-wide strategy day presentation attended by Bargate Homes staff, featuring future development visuals

Bargate has held its very first company-wide Strategy Day recently, bringing together the full management team for a day of updates, ambition, and plenty of fun.

Hosted at the Chilworth Manor Hotel, the day featured departmental presentations from all directors, sharing insights on recent achievements – including the highest number of homes delivered in Bargate’s history, entering into our 20th year and a complete brand relaunch with new-look website – team updates, and a forward look into the year ahead with clear goals and targets set.

The entire leadership team – Mark White, Steve Birch, Rachel Davies, Matt Prout, Mike Sneddon, Mick Hanson, Andrew French, Tom Evans, Lisa Green, and Out There HR – took to the stage to offer transparency, clarity, and motivation as Bargate sets its sights on the new financial year. The energy in the room was high, and so were the expectations!

After a well-earned lunch, teams headed into Southampton for a fiercely competitive and entertaining treasure hunt, finishing the day with collaboration and a good laugh.

Reflecting on the day, Managing Director Mark White said: “This was an important moment for Bargate. As we grow, it’s vital we stay connected as a team and keep everyone aligned. The openness, energy, and ambition on display made it a standout day and I want to thank absolutely everyone at Bargate for their hard work.

“Despite a tough market, we’ve delivered 250 homes – our highest ever – while maintaining our high standards with a five-star rating in the Home Builders Federation (HBF) Customer Satisfaction Survey. That’s a huge achievement and a credit to the dedication of the whole team.

“What’s more, with live planning applications representing a gross development value of around £460 million, we’re in a strong position. This Strategy Day was the perfect opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come – and set our sights firmly on what’s next.”

The event was such a success, Bargate has confirmed the Strategy Day will now become an annual fixture in the calendar.

  • Planning Approval Granted for Our Development in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire

Watercolour-style illustration of a proposed residential development in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire

We’re pleased to share that we have secured Outline planning permission for our proposed new housing development in the picturesque Hampshire village of Goodworth Clatford. The 2.9-hectare site, located on Barrow Hill, will deliver up to 40 homes, including 40% affordable housing, alongside new public open space.

This sustainable development will make a meaningful contribution to addressing local demand for affordable homes and directly respond to Test Valley’s housing land supply shortfall. Our mixed-tenure community will provide a variety of open-market housing options to suit first-time buyers, growing families, and downsizers, while the affordable housing will be delivered by VIVID, a not-for-profit affordable housing provider and the owner of Bargate Homes.

The proposals reflect our commitment to creating sustainable, high-quality housing developments. Each home will be built to a high EPC rating, ensuring energy efficiency that helps reduce carbon footprints and lowers household running costs for our future residents. Our designs also include thoughtfully landscaped spaces, rewilding initiatives, and new planting to enhance biodiversity and support natural habitats across the site.

Mark White, our Managing Director at Bargate Homes, said: “We are delighted to receive Outline planning approval for this site in Goodworth Clatford, a location steeped in character and surrounded by beautiful Hampshire countryside. This development will not only help to address the pressing need for affordable housing but also create a sustainable community with access to local amenities, open green spaces, and strong transport links.

“One of our last Test Valley developments, The Landings in Over Wallop, was completed in 2017 and was a huge success with the local community. We’re confident this will be the same – our vision is to deliver beautifully crafted homes that benefit both the residents and the environment, contributing to the local area for years to come.”

Our plans for the site align with the 20-minute neighbourhood concept, ensuring that local facilities, employment opportunities, and schools are within a short walk, cycle, or drive. Future residents will benefit from being close to key village amenities, including a primary school, post office, shops, play area, adjacent allotments, and the Queen Elizabeth II Recreation Ground.

The development is also strategically located with excellent connectivity to nearby Andover, just three miles away, which offers train services to London Waterloo and major towns including Basingstoke, Winchester, and Southampton. The A303 is just a short drive away, linking to the national motorway network.

Our proposals feature a tree-lined entrance for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians via Barrow Hill, and a mix of one to four-bedroom homes, with parking and extensive public open space.

We’re currently preparing a Reserved Matters application in collaboration with our consultant team for submission next year.

At Bargate Homes, we’re incredibly proud to share that our Marketing Executive, Bryony Brennan, has successfully completed her Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Chichester, earning a 2:1 Bachelor of Science (BSc).
