Name: Chris Sheehan
Job title: Site manager
Length of time at Bargate: 2.5 years

Your role: I am responsible for the day-to-day running of a site, generally overseeing and co-ordinating things between the office and the site team, following our build programme. There’s a lot of organising involved; going through the programmes drawn up by the office, ordering materials, chairing meetings, overseeing health and safety and ensuring we hit our target dates for completion

Which site are you working on now: I am currently managing the ground workers on a new site on which we are building 15 two, three and four-bed houses – Dunsells Lane in Ropley. This was previously a field with nothing in, now we have half a dozen ground workers putting in temporary roads, essential services and digging foundations. Before Christmas work will commence on a show home.  I am currently carrying out drawing checks and having meetings with the various trades with a view to getting properly started on this development in January

What’s the best bit of your job: It’s got to be seeing people finally move in, knowing you’ve started from scratch and overseen the site all the way through. It’s great to see happy customers! I take great pride in our work, so the attention to detail and the high-spec homes that Bargate Homes create makes the job even more satisfying. It’s great to see people on move day with smiles on their faces.

Are there any down sides to the job: The weather! Wet and cold conditions, with muddy fields in the winter, makes working outdoors a challenge. Particularly when we’re in the early days of a site build and in a temporary office – it can get quite chilly

What was your experience before joining Bargate Homes: I previously worked for CALA homes for eight years, starting as a junior assistant site manager when I was just 18. I worked my way up to the position of site manger and eventually joined Bargate Homes two and a half years ago. My first project here was at Four Marks – overseeing the production of seven homes at Watercress Place

Why do you like working for Bargate Homes: Being a small, independent, but ambitious housebuilder, there’s a great family atmosphere here at Bargate. This makes communications with the office and site teams a pleasure – everyone is friendly, approachable and happy to give you their time. There’s a good social element to the job too. There’s always an open door to the senior managers and everyone is valued. I much prefer working for a smaller company with a regional focus. There’s less travelling, which allows more emphasis on being experts in the local area.

What’s your biggest achievement so far: To come in on my first site (Watercress Place) during a bad winter and have everything run to plan was a real achievement. It was incredible to see everyone pull together on a tight build programme in order to get our customers successfully moved in before the end of March 2014.
